Recently Diemen Pepper, a small farm in the far south of Tasmania, hosted a visit from a Dietary Supplement Facility inspector from the Office of Regulatory Affairs of the US Food and Drug Administration!

Although these inspections are normally confined to significant manufacturers, it appears that Tasmannia Pepper has popped above the radar, despite having just of couple of supplement customers in the US who are using the leaf in their nutritional supplements. Anyway – we managed to satisfy expectations, and look forward to supplementing more American diets in the future!

ANFIL board member has had a busy time. Last week he was at the Royal melbourne Show promoting his Creative native meal solutions range and ANFIL as well.

In September he was in Alice Springs – wowing them with his Australian native food cuisine at the 2011 Alice Desert Festival. Andrew was the special guest host at the Wild Bush Foods Gala Dinner on the 18th September at the Crowne Plaza. Diners were treated to hors doeuvres featuring Crocodile Ribs in a Lemon Aspen Tom Yum marinade. followed by an entree featuring a Spiced Yabby Bisque with a Coconut Lemon Myrtle foam. Main course was a selection of platters featuring Slow Roast Camel Scotch Fillet – with Truffle Oil and Pepper Leaf Potato Gnocchi – with Bush Banana and Brown Butter, and other delicious options. Diners finished the evening with a ‘sugar bag’ including Native Bee Honey Parfait, with a Coolamon Tuile with Wattleseed and Ferrero Rocher Gelato. It was also a chance to educate diners about the amazing variety of Australian native foods in terms of taste, texture and aroma – as we can see by the menu.

Work has just begun on a new project to generate
data for the FSANZ nutritional panel calculator
- the tool used by formulators, chefs and
manufacturers to produce the (legally
required) nutritional panels we see on all our
retail products. Very few native foods are
included in the FSANZ database, and ANFIL,
with help from RIRDC is working to get more
of our important ingredients listed.

A handful of community spirited producers
will be making a fantastic contribution to this
work in the form of a small amount of cash and
some commercial grade product.

If you are interested in getting your product
included in this work, or joining with us on
getting our priority species through, please
contact Chris Read (chris.read@anfil.org.au)

Two spice and herb extract combinations from galangal (Alpinia galanga), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), and lemon iron bark (Eucalyptus staigerana) were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the growth of inoculated Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus and naturally present spoilage microflora on cooked ready-to-eat shrimp stored for 16 days at 4 or 8°C. A combination of galangal, rosemary, and lemon iron bark significantly reduced (P < 0.05) levels of aerobic bacteria and lactic acid bacteria at 4°C on day 12 by 1.6 and 1.59 log CFU/g, respectively.

The Desert Knowledge Australia Outback Business Networks is holding another virtual trade fair which allows local and native producers from across Australia to showcase their products to potential new customers/suppliers etc by linking up via video conferencing technology. Producers will be able to “virtually” showcase their products to 9 locations around Australia including Kalgoorlie, Exmouth, Alice Springs, Mt Isa, Longreach, Broken Hill, Melbourne and Adelaide. The producers also send samples of their products to each of the hosted locations so that whilst they are promoting their product via the video conference, the potential new customers can also sample the product. It is a great opportunity to showcase the great products that we have around the nation and also using technology to do this.

This is the 2nd year the event has been run, with last years resulting in not only new sales for the producers but also in the producers creating partnerships to come up with new products. For more information contact Paula Osborn, email posborn@rdafn.com.au
